About Knowledge Hub
In the maritime industry, staying compliant is essential not only for the safety of those on board and the prevention of pollution but also for ensuring the sustainability of maritime business. Whether you are preparing for a vetting inspection, a Class survey, or a Port State Control (PSC) inspection, or trying to understand the latest IMO mandates, having a central “Knowledge” hub is crucial for smooth sailing.
Ship Surveys and Certification
Surveys are conducted to verify that a vessel complies with specific rules and regulations. These assessments are carried out by Classification Societies. They ensure that the vessel’s structural integrity and essential machinery meet the regulations set by the classification societies, as well as international and national standards.
Port State Control (PSC)
Port State control ensures that vessels entering are fully compliant with IMO Regulations and local requirements. PSC is the “surprise quiz.” Local port authorities inspect foreign-registered ships, i.e., not ships that fly their flag, to ensure they are not “substandard.” A clean PSC report is a badge of honour for shipping companies, while a detention can be a logistical and financial nightmare.
International Regulations
The IMO regulatory landscape is anchored by the “Big Four” conventions:
SOLAS: Safety of Life at Sea.
MARPOL: Prevention of Pollution from Ships.
STCW: Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping.
MLC: Maritime Labour Convention.
Technical specifications (CAP, Shipright)
Beyond statutory requirements, vetting inspections (like SIRE or oil majors) are often required by charterers to verify that a vessel is fit for specific cargo operations and their voyages will free of hire time due to damages, mechanical failures or even regulatory non compliance.
