Evergreen Marine Corporation has once again signaled its dominance in the regional trade sector by finalizing a massive order for 16 eco-friendly 3,000 TEU container vessels. The contract, signed in early February 2026 with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, represents a significant milestone for both the Taiwanese carrier and the Chinese shipyard.

Valued at between $736 million and $896 million, this order is part of a broader $1.5 billion fleet expansion strategy aimed at modernizing regional networks while adhering to tightening global decarbonization standards.

Strategic Partnership and Fleet Renewal

This latest agreement marks the third major collaboration between Evergreen and Huangpu Wenchong since 2021. With this deal, the cumulative number of vessels developed between the two parties has reached 30.

For Evergreen, these 16 “3,100 TEU class” feeders are essential for optimizing its intra-Asia and regional service routes. By replacing older, less efficient tonnage, Evergreen is positioning itself to maintain its rank as the world’s seventh-largest container line while narrowing the capacity gap with competitors like Ocean Network Express (ONE).

Technical Specifications and Green Features

The newbuilding series is designed with a focus on “green, low-carbon” performance. While specific engine types for this exact batch often remain proprietary until later stages of construction, the vessels follow the design philosophy of Evergreen’s recent “M-Type” and “F-Type” series, prioritizing hull optimization and emissions reduction.

Key Vessel Data

Feature Specification (Approx.)
Capacity 3,133 TEU
Length Overall (LOA) ~209.80 meters
Beam (Width) ~34.80 meters
Deadweight Tonnage ~42,500 tons
Design Speed 19.0 knots
Delivery Schedule 2028 – 2030
Estimated Unit Price $46 million – $56 million

These vessels will be equipped with state-of-the-art energy-saving technologies, including advanced anti-fouling hull coatings and “S-bow” designs to minimize resistance. Many are expected to be “alternative fuel ready,” allowing for future retrofits to methanol or ammonia as the infrastructure at major shipping companies matures.

Impact on the Shipbuilding Market

For shipyards, this order is a historic win. Huangpu Wenchong has stated that this contract is the largest single-vessel-type order in the yard’s history. It underscores the yard’s growing reputation as a leader in the feeder segment, competing directly with South Korean giants.

Industry Compliance and Classification

To ensure these vessels meet the rigorous requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), Evergreen continues to work closely with leading classification societies. These bodies will oversee the construction to ensure the fleet meets Tier III NOx emission standards and EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) Phase 3 requirements.

“This order is not just about adding capacity; it’s about ‘future-proofing’ the fleet. In an era of carbon taxes and ‘Fit for 55’ regulations, an inefficient feeder is a liability.” — Maritime Industry Analyst.

Future Outlook: A Greener Horizon

This 16-vessel order is only one piece of the puzzle. Evergreen has simultaneously placed orders for seven 5,900 TEU mid-size ships at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding, bringing their total newbuild commitment this quarter to 23 vessels.

As the industry shifts toward sustainable practices, Evergreen’s investment in smaller, highly efficient feeders ensures they can navigate the logistical complexities of regional ports while keeping their carbon footprint light.
