Worlds First Coal Carrier powered by LNG

by Sanvee Gupta

Nippon Yusen has recently initiated operations of Shoyo, the world’s first coal carrier powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This vessel, a Panamax type, holds the distinction of being the largest size capable of navigating the Panama Canal due to its dimensions of 235 meters in length and 38 meters in width. With a deadweight tonnage of 95,233 tons, the ship was developed in partnership with Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. Its primary function is to transport coal from international sources to support the needs of the company’s thermal power plants. Notably, the use of LNG as its primary fuel source renders Shoyo environmentally friendly by eliminating sulfur oxide emissions and contributing to reduced levels of nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide (CO2). Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. played a key role in the construction of this groundbreaking vessel.
