Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has officially opened its Gas Center of Excellence in Doha, Qatar. This strategic move highlights the classification society’s dedication to the growing LNG market and its vital role in the global energy transition. By bringing together technical expertise in one of the world’s key gas hubs, BV seeks to deliver “future-ready” support throughout the entire gas value chain.

A Strategic Hub for a Growing Fleet

The decision to base the center in Doha is no coincidence. As Qatar continues its massive North Field Expansion, the demand for sophisticated maritime and offshore gas solutions has never been higher. The center is designed to be a “one-stop-shop” for shipowners, operators, and shipyards, offering specialized knowledge in gas carrier operations, regulatory compliance, and classification.

The facility is staffed by a dedicated team of gas specialists with deep experience in both newbuilding phases and vessels in service. This local presence is backed by BV’s global technical network, ensuring that regional stakeholders have immediate access to world-class expertise.

Bureau Veritas: By the Numbers (End of 2025)

Bureau Veritas has solidified its position as a market leader in the gas segment. The following table highlights their current standing in the global fleet:

Category Statistic
Total Gas Carriers in Service 344 vessels
LNG Carriers in Service 153 vessels
Global LNG Orderbook Share 21%
Operating LNG Fleet Share 19%
LNG Bunkering Vessel Market Share ~30%
Floating LNG Units (FLNG/FSRU) Classed >33%

Enhancing the Gas Value Chain

The Gas Center of Excellence goes beyond traditional classification societies’ centres. It integrates BV’s broader capabilities in testing, inspection, and certification (TIC). This holistic approach covers:

  • Upstream & Midstream: Supporting production, liquefaction, and transport.

  • Infrastructure: Providing asset integrity services for terminals, storage, and distribution networks.

  • Sustainability: Assisting in the adoption of sustainable practices for green shipping, including dual-fuel propulsion and membrane cargo containment systems.

Alex Gregg-Smith, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, noted that as LNG carriers and bunkering vessels become “ever-more sophisticated,” the need for deep operational expertise is paramount. The Doha hub is set to help shipping companies manage risk and meet evolving international regulations.

Regional Footprint and Future Outlook

Bureau Veritas has a long-standing presence in the Middle East, operating across 13 offices with approximately 120 specialists. To date, the group has classed over 1,250 ships in the region. This new center is expected to be a key enabler for local shipyards as they navigate the complexities of modern gas vessel construction and maintenance.

The global LNG market is projected to face potential shortages by 2030, driven by increasing demand from AI data centers and emerging markets. In light of this, the Doha Gas Center of Excellence is at a crucial point in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the world’s gas fleet.
