Fierce Firefight in the Red Sea as Armed Guards Repel Houthi Attack on MV Eternity C

A dramatic maritime security incident unfolded in the Red Sea on July 7, 2025, as the Greek-owned vessel MV Eternity C, flying the Liberian flag, came under heavy attack from Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen.

The incident occurred approximately 50 nautical miles west of Hodeidah, a strategic port under Houthi control. According to early reports, four armed speedboats launched an aggressive boarding attempt, supported by rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which struck and exploded on the ship.

Critical Damage and Crew Injuries

The attack caused severe damage to the bridge and engine room of the vessel, leaving it drifting and without control. Armed guards onboard engaged in a fierce gun battle from the bridge to prevent the attackers from boarding.

At least three seafarers were reportedly trapped in the engine room, and one crew member is believed to be injured. While early rumors suggested multiple casualties, verified sources confirm one injured crew member and three trapped below deck.

The ship’s management company, Cosmoship Management of Piraeus, Greece, gave the order to abandon ship, but the crew was unable to evacuate immediately due to ongoing threats and damage.

Second Attack in Days on Greek-Owned Ships

This is the second major Houthi attack on a Greek-owned vessel in the Red Sea in just a few days. The previous incident involved the MV Magic Seas, which was also sailing under the Liberian flag and was sunk near Hodeidah following a drone and missile assault.

These attacks underscore the escalating risks for commercial shipping in the Red Sea, particularly for vessels passing near Yemen. The situation raises urgent questions about the effectiveness and readiness of international naval coalitions, including Operation Aspides (EU) and Prosperity Guardian (US, UK, Netherlands), which have yet to prevent such assaults despite the known threats in the area.

Maritime Security at a Crossroads

The attack on MV Eternity C highlights the need for enhanced onboard security protocols, better coordination with naval protection forces, and updated maritime threat assessments for vessels transiting high-risk regions.

Shipowners and operators navigating near conflict zones must remain vigilant and ensure vessels are equipped with trained security personnel and emergency evacuation protocols.

Conclusion

The maritime industry now faces a renewed challenge in the volatile waters of the Red Sea. As attacks increase in frequency and intensity, the safety of seafarers and the security of global shipping lanes are at risk.
