Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Unveil “Gemini Cooperation” for Enhanced Ocean Network Operations
Hapag-Lloyd AG and Maersk A/S, an A.P. Maersk subsidiary, recently inked a pioneering agreement to establish a new long-term operational collaboration known as the “Gemini Cooperation.” The launch of this collaboration is for February 2025, aiming to introduce a dynamic and interconnected ocean network characterized by top-tier reliability within the industry.
One of the primary objectives outlined in this agreement is to achieve schedule reliability surpassing 90% once the network is fully integrated. This strategic move is anticipated to not only elevate service quality but also enhance transit times across key port-to-port corridors, granting customers access to some of the most extensively interconnected ocean hubs worldwide.
Both companies have exhibited a strong commitment to fleet decarbonization, with Maersk setting sights on achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, followed by Hapag-Lloyd’s target of 2045. As a result of joining forces under the Gemini Cooperation, Hapag-Lloyd will be bidding farewell to THE Alliance by the end of January 2025, aligning with Maersk’s earlier announcement with MSC regarding the conclusion of the 2M alliance by January 2025.
Throughout 2024, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will
strategize the transition from their existing alliances to this innovative operational partnership. Concurrently, existing customer service agreements will remain undisturbed as this transition unfolds.
Key Highlights of the “Gemini Cooperation” Network:
– The collaboration is set to commence in February 2025, featuring dedicated operational teams from both Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk to oversee collective operations.
– Flexibility in operational adjustments outside the network will enable both companies to scale capacity in alignment with customer demands.
– The ambitious target of achieving over 90% schedule reliability post full integration is underpinned by a robust governance structure and contractual commitments.
– Leveraging the unmatched global networks and terminal presence of Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, the cooperation will comprise approximately 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million containers (TEU), with Maersk contributing 60% and Hapag-Lloyd 40%.
– Encompassing 7 major trade routes, including Asia to US West Coast, Asia to US East Coast, Asia to Middle East, among others, the “Gemini Cooperation” will span 26 mainline services supported by a network of dedicated shuttles across strategic transshipment hubs worldwide.
