Damen Introduces New Engine with Marine Emissions Reduction System

by Sanvee Gupta

Dutch shipbuilder Damen is pushing the boundaries of marine engineering with the unveiling of their latest innovation, the Damen D16 engine. This marine engine, coupled with Damen’s proprietary marine emission reduction system, has recently earned the prestigious EU Stage V certification, marking a significant milestone in sustainable maritime solutions.

A Leap Towards Sustainability

The Damen D16 is more than just an engine; it’s a comprehensive solution designed by Damen Sustainable Solutions to minimize emissions and maximize power efficiency. This initiative aligns with Damen’s overarching goal of becoming the leading provider of sustainable maritime solutions globally. The Damen D16 is a testament to this commitment, enhancing the current portfolio with a focus on advanced, eco-friendly technology.

Advanced Features for a Greener Future

Derived from the Volvo Penta D16 IMO II, the Damen D16 stands out for its impressive features:

  • Low Fuel Consumption: Ensures economic operation and reduced operational costs.
  • Emission Reductions: Significantly cuts down SOX, NOX, and CO2 emissions, contributing to cleaner air and water quality.
  • Noise Reduction: Delivers a quieter operation, enhancing comfort and reducing noise pollution.
  • Flexibility and Reliability: Its adaptable layout ensures it fits a wide range of vessel types while maintaining dependable performance.
  • Biomass Fuel Compatibility: Can operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), further slashing CO2 emissions.

Rigorous Testing and Certification

The journey to EU Stage V certification was not taken lightly. André de Bie, Sales & Operations Manager of Sustainable Solutions at Damen, proudly shared that the team conducted extensive testing in collaboration with Volvo Penta dealer Haisma in Harlingen, the Netherlands. This rigorous process culminated in the EU Stage V certification, valid for the Volvo Penta D16 MH engine family under various Inland Waterway (IWA) and Inland Waterways Passenger (IWP) categories.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement. The EU Stage V certification exemplifies our commitment to offering efficient and flexible solutions to our clients, catering to the future of maritime operations globally,” de Bie stated.

Emission Standards and Fuel Versatility

Aside from the EU Stage V certification, the Damen D16 engine meets several key regulatory standards:

  • ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle)
  • IMO Tier III: International Maritime Organization’s emission standards.
  • Fuel Certifications: Suitable for HVO100, EN590, and ISO8217 – DMA fuel types.

These certifications underscore the D16’s capability to meet stringent environmental regulations while providing exceptional performance.

Versatility Across Marine Applications

The Damen D16 is designed for a wide array of maritime applications, including tugs, workboats, high-speed craft, and inland barges. It is available for both new builds and retrofits, making it a versatile option for modernizing existing vessels.

By running at optimal fuel efficiency, the Damen D16 engine significantly aids in reducing a vessel’s carbon footprint, representing a major leap towards sustainable maritime operations.

In summary, the Damen D16 engine is a remarkable advancement in marine technology, reflecting Damen’s persistent drive towards sustainability and innovation. With its introduction, Damen not only enhances its portfolio but also sets a new benchmark for environmentally-friendly marine engines worldwide.Regenerate Response
