India is set to make maritime history by launching its first fully electric tug, a pioneering project under the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). Spearheaded by Kongsberg Maritime, this initiative marks the world’s first full electrical tug integration, setting a new benchmark for sustainable port operations in Asia.

A Technological Leap Toward Green Shipping

Awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in collaboration with the Ripley Group, the contract includes a comprehensive equipment package from Kongsberg Maritime. This package features:

  • Permanent Magnet (PM) Azimuth Thrusters
  • Advanced Energy Storage Systems (ESS)
  • Automation and Control Platforms (K-Chief & K-Chief PMS)
  • Digital Performance Tools (Vessel Insight & Vessel Performance)
  • Full System Integration and Lifecycle Support

This end-to-end solution ensures optimal performance, reduced emissions, and long-term operational reliability for the tug, which is designed by NavNautik India and will deliver a 60-ton bollard pull.

Strategic Deployment at Deendayal Port

The tug is scheduled for delivery and commissioning in Q4 2026 and will operate at Deendayal Port in Gujarat, one of the flagship sites under the GTTP. This deployment aligns with India’s broader strategy to decarbonize its maritime sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Industry Voices on the Project

“This is a proud moment for Kongsberg Maritime. It’s not only a technological milestone but also a strong signal of trust from the Indian maritime industry.”Annette Holte, Country Manager at Kongsberg Maritime India

“Electric tugboats are fundamentally different from traditional mechanical tugs. By delivering a complete solution—from propeller to battery—we’ve built confidence in emission-reducing technologies.”Mark Callaway, Senior Sales Manager for Tug Systems

A Model for Global Collaboration

The project showcases how global expertise and local innovation can converge to drive sustainable transformation. With support from Indian stakeholders like Netincon MarketingRipley Shipping, and Mandovi Drydocks, the tug represents a new era of clean energy maritime logistics.
