Summary of the Incident

On 2nd July 2025, the inland passenger ship Elegant Lady collided with the St. Aldegund lock on the Moselle River in Germany. At the time of the accident, the vessel was en route from Traben-Trarbach to Düsseldorf and was carrying 126 passengers.

The collision caused significant damage to both the lock and the vessel. Despite the impact, the Elegant Lady could reverse under its power and moor safely in front of the lock.


Casualties and Injuries

  • Two crew members sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital in Cochem.
  • A third crew member required medical attention due to heat-related stress.

Damage and Lock Closure

  • The St. Aldegund lock suffered severe structural damage.
  • Lock operations have been suspended until at least 6th July.
  • An expert assessment is scheduled for 3rd July to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the collision and assess the extent of the damage to both the lock and the vessel.
