Trafigura Successfully Completes First Ship-to-Ship Transfer of Ammonia
Trafigura Group Pte Ltd, a prominent player in the global commodities industry, has recently achieved a significant milestone by conducting its inaugural ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of ammonia. The operation took place near the port of Ceuta in the Strait of Gibraltar, marking a momentous accomplishment for the company.
In this groundbreaking transfer, approximately 6,000 metric tonnes of ammonia sourced from CF Industries’ manufacturing complex in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, were securely exchanged between the Green Power Medium Gas Carrier (MGC), chartered by Trafigura from ship owner/operator Purus, and the Gas Aegean. The ammonia cargo is destined for Fertiberia, where it will be utilized in fertilizer production.
The STS operation was managed by International Fender Provider (IFP) in compliance with existing regulations. Though common in other industries, such as oil and gas, ship-to-ship transfers for ammonia are a relatively new practice, highlighting Trafigura’s pioneering spirit and commitment to innovation.
Looking ahead, Trafigura has taken proactive steps towards sustainable shipping by signing a contract for four MGCs capable of utilizing low-carbon ammonia as a propulsion fuel upon delivery. These vessels, set to be constructed at HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, represent a strategic investment aligning with Trafigura’s long-term environmental goals.
As a key player in global shipping with a substantial fleet under management, Trafigura is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint. The company has pledged to decrease the greenhouse gas intensity of its fleet by 25% by the end of FY2030, advocating for industry-wide initiatives like a global carbon levy on marine fuels to drive the adoption of low-carbon alternatives.
In addition to exploring diverse fuel options such as LNG, methanol, LPG, and biofuels, Trafigura has actively supported research and development in sustainable shipping technologies. From investing in low-carbon propulsion systems to implementing efficiency-enhancing measures like hull coatings and propeller antifouling technologies, the company is at the forefront of environmental stewardship in the maritime sector.
Noteworthy collaborations, such as Trafigura’s involvement in the Sea Cargo Charter and Global Maritime Forum’s Getting to Zero coalition, underscore the company’s commitment to transparency and emissions reduction. With a firm dedication to driving positive change in the industry, Trafigura continues to lead by example as a trailblazer in sustainable shipping practices.
Beyond its achievements in maritime operations, Trafigura’s extensive portfolio extends to industrial assets and operating businesses worldwide, bolstering its position as a respected and diversified commodities group with a global presence.
This successful STS transfer of ammonia not only showcases Trafigura’s operational excellence and commitment to sustainability but also highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to drive positive environmental change in the maritime industry.
