Three Crew Members Killed in Containership Fire at Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Malaysia — November 7, 2025
A devastating fire aboard the MSC Kyparissia, a Malta-flagged containership, claimed the lives of three crew members and injured three others while docked at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor state.

Incident Overview

The fire broke out at 12:23 PM local time during unloading operations in the under-hatch area of Block 5. Emergency response teams from the Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station arrived within minutes, supported by PTP’s own firefighting tugboats and personnel.

🧍‍♂️ Victims Identified

The deceased have been confirmed as:

  • A 59-year-old Malaysian man
  • A Filipino man in his 40s
  • A British man, also in his 40s

The injured include:

  • A 26-year-old Malaysian man
  • Two Filipino men, both in their 40s

All injured crew members were transported to Gleneagles Hospital Iskandar Puteri for treatment.

Vessel Details

The MSC Kyparissia, built in 2014, is a 255-meter-long containership with a capacity of 4,957 TEU. It is owned by Costamare and operated under Maersk’s time charter, serving routes across West Africa and Southeast Asia.

Emergency Response

  • A Forward Control Post (PKH) was established at the scene.
  • Nine firefighters, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), and a utility vehicle were deployed.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire, which is suspected to have started during cargo discharge due to an explosion. Maersk has stated it is working closely with local authorities, the vessel owner, and port officials to assess the damage and ensure safety.
