A terrifying blaze engulfed the Iberotel Crown Empress, a luxury Nile River cruise ship, forcing the emergency evacuation of 220 passengers, mostly foreign tourists. The incident occurred on October 28, just two days into a 12-day voyage between Luxor and Edfu. Thankfully, all passengers were rescued safely, though the vessel was completely gutted by the fire.
How the Fire Started
Initial investigations suggest the fire originated from an electrical short in the ship’s galley around 6:15 p.m. local time. Within minutes, flames spread rapidly through the lower decks, sending thick smoke billowing across the Nile. Passengers were alerted by nearby boats shining flashlights toward the cabins, prompting an urgent evacuation.
Evacuation Challenges
The evacuation was far from straightforward. The main gangway was inaccessible due to flames on the lower deck, forcing passengers to move to the upper deck. Some were rescued by Good Samaritan boats, while others boarded an emergency vessel alongside the burning ship. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “pure chaos,” with many leaving behind all personal belongings.
Casualties and Damage
Authorities confirmed no fatalities or serious injuries, though three crew members sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized. The Iberotel Crown Empress, built in 2004 and equipped with luxury amenities like a swimming pool and spa, is now out of service pending a full safety review.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Luxor has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. This incident raises urgent questions about fire safety protocols on river cruise ships, especially given a similar tragedy on the Nile nearly 20 years ago. Experts expect stricter regulations and enhanced emergency training for crews in the wake of this disaster.
