Rescue and recovery teams have made significant progress in the search for the sunken catamaran Filo Jet off the coast of Kyrenia.
The exact location of the shipwreck has been identified at a depth of 550 meters, as efforts continue around the clock to locate 20 missing individuals.
Deep-Water Naval Assets Deployed Turkish naval forces have mobilized a massive search operation, deploying specialized vessels, aircraft, and rescue teams. A key addition to the recovery effort is the TCG Işın, a 68-meter deep-water rescue and salvage ship. Commander Ulaş Cesur of the TCG Işın confirmed the vessel is utilizing advanced underwater technology to secure the wreck’s exact position before deep-water recovery operations begin.
The ongoing search involves a vast array of maritime and aerial assets:
- Vessels: 8 ships and 9 smaller boats, including the imminent arrival of a second specialized naval ship, the TCG Alemdar.
- Air Support: 1 manned aircraft, 5 drones (UAVs), and 7 helicopters.
- Specialized Teams: Turkish Navy diving units and Special Operations personnel.
- Deep-Sea Equipment: Atmospheric Diving Systems (ADS) rated for 365 meters, crewed diving capabilities up to 90 meters, and automated rescue systems capable of reaching depths of 1,000 meters.
Ocean Currents Complicate Recovery Turkish Cypriot officials met with the families of the missing at the port of Kyrenia to provide updates on the ongoing operations. Officials noted that the wreck was initially believed to be resting at a depth of 514 meters but was ultimately located at 550 meters, likely having been dragged across the seabed by strong ocean currents.
Authorities emphasized that the search and recovery efforts will continue day and night, both above and below the surface, stating that they are fully focused on reaching the shipwreck and that those responsible for the tragedy will face consequences.
