Drydocks World, a leading marine and offshore services provider and part of Dubai’s DP World group, has announced a landmark contract with Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO to convert an LNG carrier into a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) for Gabon’s offshore gas development. This strategic project marks a significant step in supporting Gabon’s ambitions for floating LNG (FLNG) infrastructure and the global energy transition.

Project Overview

The conversion will see the LNG carrier transformed into the FSU Cap Lopez, which will play a pivotal role in Gabon’s offshore gas liquefaction, storage, and export operations. The project is designed to reduce gas flaring and boost Gabon’s gas production capacity by approximately 105 million standard cubic feet per day.

Scope of Work

Drydocks World’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) scope includes:

  • Over 700 tonnes of new steel fabrication
  • Installation of around 3 kilometres of piping
  • Integration of a 1,400-tonne boil-off gas (BOG) module
  • Addition of a 350-tonne electrical house (E-House)
  • Full vessel drydocking, tank coating, and life-extension works

All conversion and life-extension activities will be conducted under the classification of Lloyd’s Register, ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance.

Timeline and Impact

The converted FSU Cap Lopez is scheduled for sail-away in July 2027. This milestone reinforces Drydocks World’s reputation for delivering high-spec LNG conversions and supporting sustainable infrastructure in the maritime sector. The project is expected to significantly contribute to Gabon’s energy landscape by enabling offshore gas liquefaction and export, while also supporting environmental goals through reduced flaring.

Industry Significance

Drydocks World’s CEO commented, “This milestone reinforces Drydocks World’s proven ability to deliver high-spec LNG conversions and support the global energy transition with sustainable infrastructure. We thank Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO for their trust and look forward to delivering this technically demanding project with excellence.”

The project follows Drydocks World’s recent successes in LNG and FLNG conversions, including contracts for floating liquefaction facilities in Mexico, further cementing its position as a global leader in complex offshore conversions.

The conversion of the LNG carrier into the FSU Cap Lopez for Gabon’s offshore gas development is a testament to Drydocks World’s technical expertise and commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. As the industry continues to evolve towards cleaner energy and innovative infrastructure, projects like this set new benchmarks for operational excellence and environmental stewardship.
