Zurich, Switzerland โ September 2025 โ In a significant step toward decarbonizing the maritime industry, Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has announced plans to introduce the worldโs first ethanol-fueled ship engines by 2026. This innovation is part of WinGDโs broader strategy to offer low-emission engine solutions that meet the International Maritime Organizationโs (IMO) climate targets.
๐ฑ Ethanol: A Promising Marine Fuel
Unlike traditional marine fuels, ethanol is renewable, widely available, and has a lower carbon footprint. WinGDโs new engine technology will allow ships to run on bio-ethanol, which can be produced from agricultural waste, making it a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
Key Benefits:
- Lower lifecycle emissions compared to LNG and methanol
- Compatibility with existing engine platforms
- Scalable fuel supply chains through global ethanol production
๐ง Technical Development & Partnerships
WinGD is working closely with fuel suppliers and shipowners to ensure the new ethanol engines are commercially viable and compliant with safety and performance standards. The company plans to integrate ethanol capability into its X-DF engine series, which already supports LNG and methanol.
โEthanol offers a clear pathway to net-zero shipping,โ said WinGD CEO Klaus Heim. โOur goal is to provide shipowners with flexible, future-proof solutions.โ
๐ Industry Impact
This announcement comes amid growing pressure on the maritime sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the IMO targeting net-zero emissions by 2050, ethanol-fueled engines could be pivotal in helping fleets transition away from carbon-intensive fuels.
