June 9, 2025 | Arabian Sea, India — A devastating fire broke out aboard the Singapore-flagged container vessel Wan Hai 503 off the coast of Kerala, India, leaving four crew members missing and several others injured. The incident has triggered a major maritime emergency response involving the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
Fire Breaks Out on Wan Hai 503
At approximately 12:30 p.m. local time, a fire erupted in one of the containers on the Wan Hai 503, quickly spreading across the deck. The vessel, en route from Colombo to Mumbai, was carrying hazardous cargo, including flammable and toxic materials, which intensified the blaze and led to multiple explosions.

Crew Evacuated and Rescue Operations Underway
Of the 22 crew members onboard, 18 were rescued after abandoning ship in lifeboats and rafts. Two of the rescued are in critical condition, while three others sustained minor injuries. Four crew members—two Taiwanese, one Indonesian, and one Burmese—remain missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by Indian Navy ships, Coast Guard vessels, and aerial surveillance.

Firefighting and Environmental Concerns
The fire continues to burn, with thick smoke visible from miles away. The hazardous nature of the cargo is hampering firefighting efforts. Authorities are working to contain the blaze and prevent an environmental disaster, as the ship carries materials that pose significant ecological risks.
Nearby vessels, including the ONE Marvel and MSC Ambra, have diverted to assist in the emergency response.
Investigation and Safety Measures
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Maritime safety experts are calling for stricter regulations on the transport of hazardous goods and improved emergency preparedness for container ships operating in high-traffic sea lanes.
