NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) N.V. has installed two wind-assist VentoFoils on the bulk carrier NBA Magritte at the port of Rotterdam. The vessel is engaged in a long-term charter contract with Cargill (USA). This installation marks the first time a unit of this type has been placed on an NYK Group vessel.

Mounted on a 20-foot-long (approximately 6-meter) flat rack container without walls, the VentoFoil features a 16-meter vertical wing that functions as a suction sail, expected to generate about five times more force compared to no-suction versions, as reported by NYK.

The VentoFoil generates propulsion by creating a pressure difference on both sides. It draws in wind through its suction port and enhances propulsion by amplifying this pressure difference. The system is user-friendly and can be easily activated or deactivated via a touch panel on the bridge, which minimizes any additional workload for the crew.

Its compact design makes the VentoFoil smaller than similar wind-assist equipment, simplifying installation and relocation processes. Moreover, it can be folded within just 5-6 minutes, ensuring it doesnโ€™t interfere with cargo handling operations.

Data on the propulsion generated will be collected and the unitโ€™s effectiveness will be measured in collaboration with Cargill International Inc. and NYKโ€™s R&D subsidiary, MTI Co., Ltd.
